Ever countered with online ads or classifieds claiming to make you rich working from home? These extremely tempting ads often make people follow them blindly without using their common sense. Honestly speaking, I won’t blame them as these three words “Work from Home”, inflict such a powerful impact and temptation which is hard to ignore. Anyways, there are very thin chances that you will become rich by following those ads but yes, they are pretty good source of alternate income. They are ideal for students, housewives and retired people who can make a few bucks by working a few hours in a week sitting at home.
So, the next question arises - what exactly is work from home? How it is done? Is it really profitable as claimed by many? What’s the catch? And lastly, should you get involved in this?

Work from Home is exactly what it implies literally, however in our context one additional thing comes in picture – Internet. Yes, all you need to do this work from home stuff is a computer with Internet connection. Ok, I have got a computer with Internet connection, what next? There are plenty of jobs available online which can be done sitting at home. A few of most popular work from home areas are,
- Data Entry
- Document Coding
- Freelance writers/editors
- Translators
- Paid Surveys
Data Entry: There are firms and individuals which maintain huge databases for maintaining various kinds of records. And quite frequently they need to update their databases with new entries, mostly on day-by-day basis. They hire people full-time or part-time to work for either pre-defined or mutually agreed set of hours. Terms of payments are usually defined per hundred, thousand or million basis. For example you may get paid $10 for every 100 entries or so. Best part is you just need to be aware of basic computer operation and work is done via Internet using company’s web interface. Usually employer provides training for the work, if required.
Document Coding: Functionally this job is like data entry but here you need to prepare documents instead of data entry. Firms need to prepare various documents for their products or services e.g. user guides, product catalog etc. They give you training for corresponding product or service and you may need to document its functionality, usability etc. In this case, firms usually prefer people who are from same industry background so that they can better understand the product or service.
Freelance Writer/Editors: This is a better paying job if you have the right skills and are working with a good company. Most of the content based websites need to continuously update contents of their websites to provide more information to users and to be ranked higher across search engines like Google, Yahoo. Ask etc. Most of such websites are not run by big companies so they don’t usually have enough people to keep developing contents for their websites. Hence they either hire people who can develop effective contents specific to their website themes or simply pay freelance writers per article. If writing or editing contents is your hobby and one of your prime interests then this is the right job for you. For others, I won’t recommend this job at all. Translators: This job requires multi-lingual skills. If you are familiar with foreign languages like French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic or else then this could be a good option for you. You just need to do translate various documents from one language to another. This is usually done through e-mails. Hiring party will send you the documents which need to be translated and you need to translate and send them back. Payment terms can be either decided by mutual agreement or company may decide to pay as per their standards.
Paid Surveys: This is one of the easiest jobs. Most of the corporate firms, before launching a new product or service conduct some surveys through third parties to know the reaction of people, to get a feel whether there is actually any demand of their products what people feel about their products etc. Usually these third parties do not disclose the name of company for which they are carrying out the surveys. You just need to register yourself on these third party websites which bring you such online surveys. You may not necessarily get paid in cash; instead some websites prefer to give discount vouchers, free magazine subscriptions, free holiday or travel voucher etc on successfully filling out the surveys.
